THE Nambucca Strikers scored a fabulous five goals in the local derby match against the Macksville Stingers last weekend.

The 5-0 victory provides a crucial three points to elevate the Strikers into fifth place on the ladder and just two points behind second place Boambee Eagles as they eye a top four finish.

Strikers coach Rhys Jones said that controlled possession football was the strategy.

“Nambucca took the field with eight players under eighteen and went about their business controlling passing and working the ball around the field,” he said.

“Macksville to their credit kept up the pressure, pushing all the time and the 0-0 scoreline at halftime showed the passion that Macksville played with.

“Half-time chats with the Strikers women’s team are always calm and collected, the strategy was working and I was pleased with the players and very happy with their work,” said Rhys.

His side responded after the break, scoring immediately after the restart.

Increasing the pace of the game, the Strikers were able to control possession, scoring a further four second half goals to win 5-0.

“Macksville never gave up, fought hard, played with commitment and passion,” Rhys said.

“We had to show discipline and stick to the game plan which we did, yes we did lapse and went back to old habits, however we got back on track and things worked out well.

“I am happy with each and every player, especially with our youngsters, our experienced players were singing their praises after the game also.

Macksville coach Rochelle McMurray was pleased with the effort from her team.

“This is the first time this season we had a full team and even reserves, so it is onwards and upwards from here,” she said.

The Strikers now prepare for a tough match with the Urunga Raiders at Coronation Park.

“A real cracking game is expected as both teams are equal in the standings,” concluded Rhys.
