Nambucca Heads Island Golf Club Nambucca Valley Sport Sport by News Of The Area - Modern Media - June 30, 2022 Working bee volunteers with the course greenkeeper Greg. THIS wonderful run of good weather presented our Greenkeeper Greg with a perfect opportunity to rejuvenate our greens after the months of deluge, so the course was closed on Monday and Tuesday to complete this task. Working bee volunteers Jeffrey Vanderwyck, Geoff Brooks and William Mann were spotted resting on their shovels after a hard morning’s work assisting our staff on Monday. Great job everyone – well done. This week’s featured sponsor is Nambucca Plaza Butchery – thank you. On Wednesday 22 June, the women played a 4BBB Stableford with Henny Oldenhove and Denise Paluch winning with 44 points from Bryony Brownlie and Kerry Shearer on 44 points, and Coral McCann and Wendy Avery third on 42 points. The ball rundown to 39 points. NTP’s to Cheryl Gilmour & Dorothy Bunyan on 5, Jan Harris got the Pizza voucher on 13, and Denise Paluch on 18. Thursday’s event was a Medley Single Stableford. Joe Street (18) had the best round of the day with 40 points to win Division 1 (0-18) from Martin Jones (13) with 37 points. In Division 2 (19-45) Paul McElhinney (22) and Peter Bush (19) both had 39 points, with Paul winning the countback – just needed another putt to drop Bushy. Good scores from Nathan Ison and Keith Elphick 37, and Dennis Ashton 36. The Ball rundown to 32 on countback. Saturday’s event was also a Medley Stableford. We needed a countback to decide the winner of Division 1 (0-19) with Phillip Mander (14) and Peter Moxon (19) both coming in with 36 points, Philip having the better back nine. Best round of the day was from Michael Summerill (26) scoring 40 points to win Division 2 (20-45), from Frank Taylor (24) with 37 points. Other good scores from Warren Fuller & Rodney Ford 36. The Ball Rundown to 32 on countback. We had 10 Teams travelling to Macksville Country Club to compete for the Brian Burns Memorial Shield. For those who did not know Brian, he was a past Club Champion 19 times at Nambucca and 8 times at Macksville – quite an achievement. Playing an Aggregate Team Stableford, Nambucca won the first round at home 8 games to 2 ‘before the big wet’, but we knew we would be hard pressed to win the 3 games needed on Macksville’s home course to regain the Shield. Congratulations to the Macksville boys who defeated us by 8 ½ to 1 ½ , thereby retaining the shield by the slimmest of margins – thank you for the camaraderie! See you next year. Our Annual Veteran’s Week of Golf is back on after two years due to COVID and the floods – we already have a full field of visiting Vets, many from interstate, for the event commencing on Monday 4 July until Friday 8 July. Thank you to our many local businesses who generously contribute to the sponsorship of this popular event which is a great boost to businesses in the Valley. A, Open 36 Hole Single Stableford ‘Bowl’ event for Men & Women follows on the weekend Saturday and Sunday 9 & 10 July – generously sponsored by Toyota Genuine Service – visitors welcome, bookings through Pro Shop 6568 8172. See you on the Island.
