Great Lakes Council is taking an opportunity to recognise the contributions that Indigenous Australians make to our country and our society.

NAIDOC Week 2015 will kick off with a flag-raising ceremony and morning tea hosted by the Mayor on Monday 6 July at 9.30am at Great Lakes Council in Breese Parade, Forster.

Every year NAIDOC week celebrates the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

This year’s NAIDOC theme is “We all stand on sacred ground – Learn, Respect and Celebrate”.

This year the theme highlights Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples’ strong spiritual and cultural connection to land and sea.

The theme is, an opportunity to pay respects to country, honour those who work tirelessly on preserving land, sea and culture and to share the stories of many sites of significance or sacred places within the Nation.

To that end, immediately following morning tea, there will be a gathering on Tobwabba Hill (South Street, Forster), where some of our local Elders will be telling the stories of that sacred site.

All members of the public are invited to participate in these activities on Monday 6 July.

The local Aboriginal community also invites members of the public to attend the Family Fun Day at the park in Macintosh Street, on Wednesday 8 July.
