Myall U3A members receive valuable tech and apps advice

MU3A’s Technical Co-Ordinator Denis Church presented on the various apps useful to our community.

Snoozers were losers as guest speaker Rachael Vaughan, from State MP Kate Washington’s office, elucidated State Government apps including MyGov and Services NSW.

Denis Church, Myall U3A’s Technical Co-ordinator, delivered vital information and insight into the local (and beyond) apps, which are easy to use, and time savers, too.

‘MyGov’ and ‘Services NSW’ apps link most Federal and State Government services, respectively, such as Medicare, myTax and Centrelink, or car/van/boat registration renewals, also offering rebates and savings-voucher offers.

‘Hazards Near Me’ is the updated emergency information app, covering fire, flood and tsunami, vital for staying aware of changing situations with the pending fire season.

‘EmergencyPLUS’ is essential, with many next-level options, including the National Relay Service connecting the speech- and hearing-impaired to emergency services.

The Bureau of Meteorology’s app holds up-to-the-minute weather information, and ‘NSW Fuel Check’ pinpoints the cheapest fuel around your area or on your route.

Nature lovers will love the ‘NSW National Parks’ App, pointing to the highlights of every forest, with downloadable maps and guides for signal blackspots.

‘What 3 Words’ divides the world into 3x3metre grids, an alternative to coordinates, and easier to use, too, while ‘Live Traffic’ can help you avoid a traffic jam, and locate relevant roadworks.

‘Sap-Send-Solve’ lets you ‘snap’ public safety hazard photos, then ‘send’ them in to get ‘solved’ by the appropriate service.

“Some apps have multiple versions, so do your research and go with whichever you are most comfortable using,” said Annie Rutter, MU3A’s Publicity Officer.

“We want to congratulate the ladies from the Red Cross for supplying a delicious afternoon tea – fit for a king or queen, and thank you to Denis for a helpful and fascinating presentation which was most enjoyable, as usual!” Ms Rutter added.
