Myall Quays Residents Recycling for Charities

Graeme Moore and Jason Bourke were happy to accept a cheque for $1250 at the Westpac Helicopter Rescue Service Maintenance area in Broadmeadow.

DURING the past year a small number of interested residents from Myall Quays Tea Gardens have banded together to recycle, glass bottles, aluminium cans and plastic drinking bottles.

Refunds, totalling more than $800, have been donated to local worthwhile charities including the RFS, Lifesaving organisations, patient transport and cancer respite accommodation (Harry’s House).

What started as a small scale operation involving collecting a few bottles and cans and cashing them in at Hawks Nest Newsagency has morphed into a different process throughout the year. Initially only 100 cans / bottles could be recycled at the one time, so a husband and wife team would present at the Hawks Nest Newsagency with 200 items (100 each), destined for recycling.

As more residents in Myall Quays began to support the initiative, trips to recycle more and more items became more frequent and the volume of recyclables grew.

Rather than throwing a few garbage bags full of recyclables into the boot, at 100 a time, a trailer was needed to store the goods.

As the amount of recyclables increased TOMRA return machines at Medowie, Raymond Terrace, Salamander Bay and Waratah have been used.

Participants feel there are at least two benefits from this voluntary process.

That recycled goods are kept from landfill, while also supporting local charities.

The most recent donation of $1,250, representing 12,500 bottles and cans was made to the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service.

The Christmas period generally leads to the availability of recyclable containers.
