More than 130 swimmers from all over New South Wales took part in the carnival. Brad Jenson, Myall Club Head Coach and Co-Ordinator of the Carnival told News Of the Area, “Out of our total membership about 70 percent of our swimmers competed today.” “It’s all about participation, enjoying the water and a bit of fun competing,” Brad said. ‘’At our age, it’s about having that opportunity to challenge yourself.” To qualify to swim in the Masters you only have to be over 18 years of age and there is no restriction at the other end of the age scale, you can be 100 plus and still swim. “You swim in your age groups, in five year increments.” Since last year’s Carnival, Tea Gardens pool now has its solar heating back and new black lines. However being an outdoor pool most of the Myall Masters swimmers still only take to the water from September to April. ‘‘Some of the swimmers are keen enough to travel to Newcastle for an indoor pool or don the wetsuits and swim at Jimmy’s all year round,” Brad said. Late last year the Myall Masters Swimming Group held their first marathon swim on Jimmy’s Beach, an event their hoping will happen again in 2018. But the bottom line said Brad is the three f’s. “It’s all about having fun, friendship and getting some fitness.” By Margie TIERNEY TEA GARDENS POOL: Myall Masters Swimmers.
