“Ronnie was superb in delivering a talk, illustrated with slides and videos, on when and how the first people, the Aborigines, arrived in this Great Southern Land,” Warwick Nichols said.

“To understand that, she gave the U3A audience and guests a geology refresher course on continental drift and plate tectonics as well the astronomy related to the generation of an ice age due to variations in the earth’s path around the sun.”

Warwick added, “This then led to a discussion of glaciation and the accompanying ocean level falls which resulted in the exposure of islands visible one from the others, between Indonesia and Australia.”

“Animal populations in Oz before the arrival of people were discussed including the megafauna and the possible factors leading to extinction of these animals.

The megafauna were the giant reptiles, birds and marsupials which once roamed Australia.

Ronnie went on to talk about the advances in dating techniques, nuclear radiation and its role in biological and mineral dating and dna in fossils.

The success of her presentation was such that the U3A has scheduled another talk by Ronnie Nichols on Friday 20 July.
