The commemoration will be conducted at the Stroud Memorial Grandstand which was built in 1926 after the community of Stroud decided that they wanted a memorial that served a purpose within their community, as well as commemorating the service of the soldiers in WW1.

The Grandstand at the showground has a roll of honour which has been duplicated at the newer Stroud ANZAC Memorial in the township of Stroud.

The event is being delivered by the Stroud District Historical Society and will see the year 5 and 6 students attend a service at the Showground.

Past Mayor of Great Lakes John Chadban will be delivering the address.

He was born and bred in Stroud and has recently visited the Western Front where many died fighting the Germans.

He will be able to give the students a firsthand account of his experience on the battle fields on which his ancestors from Stroud served.

The service will include a minutes silence at 11am.

Rodney Gorton, President of the Stroud Historical Society told News Of The Area, “After the service we will have games for the children to play, that reflect the games that children would have been playing in 1918.

“They will also enjoy a sausage sizzle which is being provided by the Stroud Men’s Shed,” he said.

This is the first time that the Historical Society has delivered this type of memorial service for Remembrance Day and it is hoped that it will be repeated in future years and potentially opened to a wider audience.

Tea Gardens and Hawks Nest service will commence at the cenotaph from 10.30am.

The event will be MC’d by the RSL Sub Branch President Terry Munright and the guest speaker is Mal Mortem who has recently retired from service and comes from one of the pioneering families of the Tea Gardens region.

Jenny Ross-Henry of the Tea Gardens and Hawks Nest RSL Sub-Branch told News of The Area, “We are looking forward to Remembrance Day and we will be selling badges at Coles the week before.”

The service will be concluded by a morning tea served by the RSL Ladies Auxiliary.

In Karuah the commemorations of Remembrance Day will commence at 10.45am at the memorial which will be followed by drinks for the veterans back at the Karuah RSL Club.

Our thoughts are with those who have served, those whose loved ones have served and those currently serving on the day which marks the end of the war to end all wars.
