LEVERAGING the collective power of a group, Mountain Community Network Incorporated (MCN) celebrated its official launch on Sunday 19 June 2022 at the freshly renovated Ulong Community Hall.

The group’s purpose is to represent the interests of the 800-strong community and advocate for ethical social and economic development of the area, which includes the picturesque mountain villages of Ulong and Lowanna.

Over a tasty BBQ lunch, founding members gave a fun and informative presentation about MCN – where it has come from and where it hopes to go.

Close to 50 people came together for the launch, including key community members and representatives of the local Rural Fire Service, Community First Responders and local businesses.

Attendees came away excited and inspired by what they heard.

“It’s wonderful to see what a little community like ours can achieve,” said Carol Cleary, proprietor of Ulong General Store, adding, “By working together and communicating better we can only become stronger and more resilient.”

Formed by passionate locals, with the support of Coffs Harbour City Council, MCN’s core objectives are to connect a unique community located in the hills and valleys of the spectacularly lush and beautiful Coffs Harbour hinterland.

“We are often forgotten up here, at the outer reaches of the Coffs Harbour LGA, so we needed to find a way to make our voices heard and help us meet the current and future needs of our community,” Brenda Mulhearn, the group’s interim president, told News Of The Area.

In the short time MCN has been operational, the group has already secured local and State Government grants totaling over $250,000 and helped enthusiastic community members with a number of local initiatives including: a project to install community accessible defibrillators in the area; the formation of a local permaculture group; a grant writing workshop; and a community music festival (unfortunately postponed due to the endless rain).

“MCN is now looking to connect with organisations and businesses who have an interest and influence in planning and infrastructure, education and training, employment, health and well-being, recreation and any other industries that can help further strengthen the community,” said Brenda.
