MISS Honey, the koala from Pindimar, made news in the NOTA in late June after Sarah Dryburgh and her family found Honey on their non-urban block, after which she was taken to Port Stephens Koalas and diagnosed with Chlamydia and cataracts.

Although Honey was given the best support from Port Stephens Koalas, Sarah issued the following statement to a community group who had been following updates on the Koala.

“With the heaviest of hearts I received a phone call this afternoon to let me know the beautiful Honey girl passed away this afternoon.

“She had been unwell the last week, seeing the vet a few times and spending time in ICU as they could not get her core temperature up and she was cold,” Sarah wrote.

The Dryburgh family was hoping that one day Honey would be recovered well enough to be released back in Pindimar, but unfortunately Honey didn’t make it.

Sarah went on to thank the staff at Port Stephens Koalas who tended to Honey, ensuring the best care with “fabulous gum leaves” and “love in her final weeks”.

Although a devastating end to Miss Honey’s story, Sarah believes that this situation may be an opportunity to learn.

“If there is one thing to take away from this, it’s that if you see or find a Australian mammal and you think something is wrong, please contact WINC (Wildlife in Need of Care) and advise them on the situation,” she wrote.

WINC will make a judgement on the situation of the animal and advise the next course of action.

“If we didn’t do that for Honey she most probably would have suffered and we’re glad this wasn’t the case.”
