OPEN spaces and recreation strategies within the MidCoast Council LGA are still in drafting, but will soon close to public exhibition on Tuesday, 27 June.

MidCoast residents may not have been able to attend one of the four recent ‘Drop-In’ sessions, the only one in the southern extent of the LGA being at Hawks Nest on 24 May.

However, the Open Space and Recreation Strategy 2023-2035 is still available for viewing on Council’s website at https://haveyoursay.midcoast.nsw.gov.au/outdoor-spaces.

Readers brace for a hefty 194-page read, viewable through Internet browsers, or a 16MB PDF download.

The digital tome contains Council’s most recent attempt to outline how outdoor spaces in the region – including parks, gardens, sports fields, playgrounds, dog parks, foreshore areas, walkways, cycleways and other public places – will be planned, maintained and delivered, through to 2035.

“Your input and feedback will help us to deliver on your vision for open spaces in the MidCoast,” said Council’s Director of Liveable Communities, Paul De Szell.

“The Open Space and Recreation Strategy will guide future planning and funding decisions, including applications for external funding.”

Council’s website claims that the Strategy was informed by various events attended by over 1600 people during 2022.

“Both locals and visitors said they want better connected green space, more accessible footpaths and cycleways, more flexible open space, and more activities for young children and teenagers.

“People told us that they value our outdoor lifestyle and want to encourage people with a range of abilities and ages to interact with each other, safely and affordably,” added Mr De Szell.

Residents wishing to be heard before the 27 June deadline should hunt for the narrow input field just below the viewer and PDF download link, limited to just 200 characters (not words) if they wish to add anything else.

Formal submissions can also be made via email to council@midcoast.nsw.gov.au and quoting the ‘Draft Delivery Program 2022-26 and Operational Plan 2023-24’, or by using an online Submission Form, or even by snail mail.
