“We have a neighbour aid program which provides assistance with shopping, transport and outings for people who often live on their own and need assistance,” Christine Ellis, Senior Leader Ageing Services from MidCoast Council told News Of The Area.

“We need volunteers who love working with the elderly, who want to be part of their community and make a contribution,” said Christine.

“In this area there are younger retirees, who we know want to continue to make a difference to people’s lives.”
To continue to grow the “My Aged Care” program more volunteers are desperately needed.

Dana Rederis, is a client support worker in Hawks Nest.
“As a volunteer you could read to an elderly person or play a game of cards,” said Dana.

“It’s very fulfilling for the volunteers, once they join they really build up their own friendship base and become a close group.”

You can volunteer for as little as 2 hours a week or a number of days a fortnight.
There is no set time.

The service also offers a training program so all volunteers are fully prepared.
“Anyone with a good heart, is who we’re looking for.”

Christine and Dana are holding an Information Session at the Tea Gardens Library for anyone wishing to find out more about the program or offer their services.

It’s an easy date to remember, Remembrance Day Friday 11 November between 10am and Noon.
Alternatively you can call Aged Services on 1300 658 830.
