Also, in another first for the region, MidCoast’s Australia Day will be part of something much bigger, with the recent announcement that the region will host the renowned Saltwater Freshwater Festival on Australia Day in 2020.

“This will mark an exciting change in direction in how we celebrate Australia Day on the MidCoast, one that I believe bodes well for the future,” said MidCoast Council Mayor, David West.

The new direction means new citizens will be welcomed to the MidCoast and esteemed award recipients will be acknowledged, through a single civic ceremony. Categories for awards will take in nominations from across the MidCoast and include Citizen of the Year, Young Citizen of the Year, Sportsperson of the Year, Activity/Event of the Year, Volunteer of the Year and the Cultural Award.

Nominations are now open and forms can be accessed on Council’s website or by calling in to one of Council’s offices.

“We have a strong history of recognising the many incredible individuals and groups who all contribute to make this region a better place for everyone to live,” said Cr West.

“I’m excited that the entire region will get to know their Citizen of the Year, their Volunteer of the Year, and deserving award recipients across all six categories, it’s a huge honour.

“Consolidating our official celebrations is about unity and embracing the strengths across our whole region. As always, local groups and communities are encouraged and will be supported to host their annual Australia Day activities at a local level.”

Completed nomination forms and associated information must be received by 4pm on Wednesday 8 January 2020 and can be submitted via email to taree@midcoast.nsw.gov.au, lodged at a Council Customer Service Counter or posted to MidCoast Council PO Box 482, Taree NSW 2430.

“I look forward to blending our Australia Day formalities with the beautiful cultural celebration that is the Saltwater Freshwater Festival,” Cr West added.

“It’s going to be a wonderful celebration.”
