The candidates also fielded questions from the public relating to employment and economic growth, inclusive representation and planning for the future. “There are challenges ahead and we need to get the council working together to give it strength and move forward,” candidate David West said. “We have to look at the big picture of economic development and tourism, ensure equal distribution of funding and value for rates,” Karen Hutchison stated. Addressing the public, the hopeful candidates were quick to dispel fears that smaller communities could be left without a voice, with all guaranteeing to represent the entire council area. “It’s about fairness across the region, we need to support all communities for them to grow and develop in their own unique way,” Katheryn Smith said. “The most important issue is the workability of Council, we need to work towards giving all people a voice no matter where they live,” Len Roberts stated. The candidates also indicated who their preference would go to. Group F, Karen Hutchinson, has indicated she is swapping preferences with Group A, led by Len Roberts. Group B, headed by Brad Christensen is swapping with Group I, Katheryn Smith. Group D’s Peter Epov stated he is exchanging with Group G, Kathryn Bell. Group C, John Rosenbaum, Group E, Troy Fowler, Group H, David West, Group J, David Keegan and Group K, Jan McWilliams, have no preferences. Ungrouped candidates, Russell Gardner, Paul Sandilands and Susan Walker also indicated no preferences. The amalgamation created one of the largest local government areas in the State, both in area and population. Katheryn Smith heads Group I, Karen Hutchinson leads Group F and David West and Dan Patch from Group H. Group B, Mark Barratt, Aaron Temple and Brad Christensen. Group K: Jan McWilliams, Jim Morwitch and Timothy McLean. Group G: James Hooke, Kathryn Bell and Lance Fletcher. Group J: Country Labor team headed by Dr David Keegan, Graham Robinson, Gaye Tindall and John Weate. Ungrouped Candidates: Russell Gardner, Susan Walker and Paul Van Drunen.
