They are coached by Ray Stuart, who is a National Adjudicator on the Australian Dancing Board and Director of the Society of Australian Teachers of Dancing, which is a national not for profit body dedicated to the promotion of Ballroom Dancing.

Ballroom dancing is an activity that is not well known to the general public, but amazingly has tens of thousands of dedicated dancers all over Australia who participate in the various styles of Ballroom Dancing.

Gary and Cheryl Roberts started dancing with Ray about nine years ago as raw beginners who had never danced before, and are trained at his Medowie studio, which has a fully sprung 200 square metre dance floor.

Ray Stuart told News Of The Area, “After making the decision to have a shot at the competition side of Ballroom Dancing, Gary and Cheryl have never looked back, winning dozens of National Titles, and winning trips to most Australian cities to represent New South Wales.”

“They are the current 2017 Australasian New Vogue and Old Time Champions, undefeated at this level since 2015.”

“Major national wins in the Ballroom and Latin American event last year capped a year of great success for these Medowie dancers,” he said.

Many other students from Medowie, as well as Newcastle, have been trained here under the teachings of Ray Stuart, and have gone on to become national dance champions.

Ray said, “Damien Kolbas and Talysa Trevallion who were trained at my Medowie dance studio won a National Scholarship, which enabled them to travel to the United Kingdom to represent Australia at the British and World Ballroom Dance Championships.”

“No mean feat when you consider they were up against the best in Australia to win this scholarship, and they were trained here in Medowie after discovering the joy and love of dancing when I was a dance teacher at their Primary School.”

Medowie residents Ty Statham and Danielle Pretty also have a string of great successes on the dance floor, as well as a number of others.

For many people, the mere act of making the decision to take up dancing has changed their lives, it has given them new confidence, new social skills, friendship, while having fun and exercising to great music.

In the world of competition dancing, there is a wide age range of people who participate in this graceful artform, from youngsters as young as eight years old, all the way up to Masters.

It is never too late to put on your dancing shoes, go out there and trip the light fantastic.
