THE ground has been broken, the soil has been turned, and Medowie Sports & Community Club is now one step closer.

News Of The Area met with some of the steering committee last week at the Ferodale site of this future community asset.

Councillor Chris Doohan, Deputy Mayor of Port Stephens Council, and a member of the club steering committee said, “I am ecstatic that there is action on the site of the future Medowie Sports & Community Club on Ferodale Road.”

“I have been leading, advising, supporting and contributing to this committee for over eight years, with lots of hours spent researching, planning, debating and executing our plan that is now showing signs of real action.”

“I couldn’t be prouder right now, and I hope this club will be the future hub for our community,” he said.

The club came before council again last week during their last session, with a Section 96 Development Application.

The application asked council to approve the amendments made to the original approved recreation facility.

The Section 96 application to modify the development was accepted by the elected council, as one of their last votes in this sitting council.

The successful application proposed to modify several aspects of the approved development to ensure the facility meets all requirements for stormwater infrastructure, acoustic barriers, entry roads, operating hours and facility layout.

This family-friendly community facility will be built in a number of stages, with stage one including a bowling green, playground, sealed carpark and full kitchen facilities to provide food and drinks in some capacity.

Stage two will be revealed once confirmed and approved by council.

For now, plans are in motion, fences are up, and we will follow the progress of this community facility as it unfolds.

Congratulations to the new board, and original steering committee for working hard on a dream that was first discussed nearly 30 years ago.
