The end of hostilities was official with the signing of the armistice on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918. Unfortunately, the “war to end all wars” did not end global conflict with World War II commencing only two decades later. After the end of World War II in 1945, the Australian and British governments decided to change the name from Armistice Day to Remembrance Day as they felt it was a more appropriate day to commemorate all of those who had died during times of war. It is tradition, that on this day, a one minute’s silence be observed at 11am in memory of those who died or suffered for Australia’s cause in all wars and armed conflicts. Remembrance Day is also observed by the wearing of red poppies on shirts, jackets and other articles of clothing. Neil Biggar, Hon. Secretary of Medowie RSL sub-Branch, told News Of The Area, “We warmly welcome all who would like to join us on this very important day.” The Medowie service will be held on Saturday 11 November, to commence at 10.30am at the Medowie Lions Memorial Park, located at the intersection of Medowie Road and Ferodale Road in Medowie.
