While we all swelter in the heat, hide in the air conditioning and wish for cooler days, Medowie RFS firefighter Darryl Luck is training in his firefighting gear any spare moment he gets when not fighting fires. The 47-year-old has been a member of the Medowie brigade for 14 years, and is currently training five to six days a week at Plus Fitness Medowie for some very special events. Or media@newsofthearea.com.au Or CLICK FOR ADVERT QUOTE The first event on 12 March will see Darryl complete the ‘Scott Firefighter Stair Climb’, which is sixty-nine floors of the Columbia Centre in Seattle, Washington. Twenty-four kilograms of firefighter gear including breathing apparatus must be used to complete the climb. This event raises money for Leukemia and Lymphoma research and services. The second event on the 17 March, the New York City Saint Patrick’s Day parade, will see Darryl marching with the Fire Department of New York (FDNY), New Zealand and fellow Australian firefighters. Event three on 19 March is a particularly special event, the New York City Memorial Stair Climb, in memory of firefighters who lost their lives in the 911 attacks on America. This event takes place in the No. 4 World Trade Centre, New York, and consists of a 72 floor climb, whilst wearing 24 kilograms of kit. Darryl told News Of The Area that the symbolism of this event is very special. “Only 343 firefighters can climb in this memorial climb as they represent the 343 firefighters who lost their lives on September 11 2001 at the World Trade Centre attack.” “Each firefighter carries a photo of one of the firefighters who lost their life on that day as a mark of respect.” The climb raises money for the ‘Friends of Firefighters’ charity and the 9-11 Tribute Centre. The Friends of Firefighters charity looks after the physical and mental health of New York Firefighters and their families, and the 9-11 Tribute Centre is a place where the public can learn the personal stories of survivors, first responders, family members of those who died and local residents of New York affected by what they experienced during the attacks. “Approximately 1900 firefighters from over 5 countries attend.
