The National Show is the biggest event of the year for the Independent Miniature Horse Registry and attracts entrants from all parts of Australia. Preparation began months earlier for the Medowie equestrians under the guidance of coach Brenda Peet with assistance from Olivia’s mother Emma Nichols. Each class required a different skill set from both horse and handler which made for a steep learning curve for Olivia and Ebony but their commitment to training paid off in the showring. Olivia and Unique Inch High Peekaboo contested the 9 – 11 age group taking first place in the Best Presented Horse and Youth Handler, Youth Showmanship, Trail and Liberty classes and 5 th place in the Hunter class and she was awarded Grand Champion Youth 9 – 11 Years. When asked by NOTA what her favourite event was Olivia said, “It was in the Senior Small Horse Hunter because my Mum was in the same class.” It was Ebony’s first time competing at the National show in the very competitive 12 – 14 years age group. “I had a great show at Nationals and was surprised and very excited to win Reserve Grand National Champion,” said Ebony. Both girls are involved in other equestrian disciplines. Ebony attends Salt Ash Sporting Club and local Agricultural shows and Olivia is an accomplished harness racing driver and will she will be racing at the NSW Mini Trotting Championships at Tamworth Paceway on 20 April.
