TWO Medowie Dancers swept the floor at the recent Lakeside Dance Challenge in Forster, taking home a collection of awards each.

Amelia Cochrane, 12, took out 1st place 12/u Broadway Jazz, 1st place 12/u open Jazz and 1st place 12/u lyrical.

Zahli Kerr, 15, was awarded 1st place 16/u lyrical, 1st place open age lyrical, 1st place 16/u jazz, 1st place open age jazz,
1st place 16/u contemporary, 1st place 16/u broadway jazz, Overall senior modern champion and Overall senior jazz champion.

A wonderful achievement for both girls who work so hard with their dancing.

Zahli started dancing at age six in Forster.

She has been dancing at Debbie Rae Dance Studio in both Medowie and Maitland for the past two years.

Amelia has been dancing for Debbie Rae Medowie since she was three years old.

Both girls dance in the styles of jazz, lyrical, contemporary, ballet, tap, hip hop and acro/cheer.

Zahli has competed in many eisteddfods in the Newcastle, Port Stephens and Mid North Coast areas.

She has received numerous awards along the way including district and most promising awards.

Amelia is only new to the eisteddfod scene in the past 12 months.

Both girls compete in the eisteddfods both as solo performers and in the group dances with Debbie Rae.

Both girls attend Irrawang High School, where Amelia is part of the junior dance ensemble and Zahli is part of the senior dance ensemble.

Zahli is looking forward to leaving next Thursday for the CAPA tour performing through outback Queensland.

Zahli told News Of The Area, “Dancing gives me a feeling of belonging in the world, created by the love of dance.”

“I would love to be a dance teacher in the future.”

Amelia loves dancing because it gives her an escape from the rest of the world. She loves to perform and make people happy.

Amelia told News Of The Area, “I would love to perform around the world and one day come back to Medowie and become a dance teacher.”

She already helps her dance teachers with the tiny tots both in class and on stage at the concerts each year.

She adores little children and loves to see them grow and enjoy their dancing as much as she does.
