The team, which is based in the Hawks Nest Community Centre, cooks and delivers more than a thousand meals a month to clients who live as far away as Bulahdelah to the north, to Karuah to the south and all points in between. “Some of our volunteers have been with us for 15 years,” Dan Holmes said. “Without the volunteers we wouldn’t have a service.” “Every 12 months we have a big lunch at the end of the year, but we thought it would be great to have this morning tea to thank the Volunteers for all their hard work.” Meredyth Rae is the Office Supervisor, “Our kitchen is staffed by mainly volunteers on our cooking days.” “The kitchen staff always gets to share morning teas every time they are on shift, but those who deliver don’t, so the morning tea was a great way to get everyone together.” Meredyth started as a volunteer at Bulahdelah more than 20 years ago, before coming on as staff. “It is amazing what you get out of it, the joy of delivering the meal and knowing that you’re often the only person that person sees for the day.” “It’s a great connection, spending some time with our clients.” And of course, Meredyth said, “We could always do with more volunteers.” By Margie TIERNEY MEALS ON WHEELS VOLUNTEERS: Morning Tea Celebration.
