SAWTELL Catholic Care (SCC) aged care facilities at Marian Grove and Mater Christi have been awarded first prize in the Coffs Harbour Garden Club’s Spring Garden Competition Category 11 – Whole garden of hospitals, clubs and commercially operated retirement estates and nursing homes. The site covers approximately 30 acres, and can house up to 350 residents, and the gardens are an important part of the life of the community. SCC Director of Mission Matt Digges said, “Our gardens are an integral part of providing a healthy environment for the physical, spiritual and emotional life of our residents.” The area is maintained by a team of grounds staff as well as many of the residents themselves, and includes advanced water management features including surge ponds and storage areas for excess runoff. Plans are being developed for mare gardens on the site, including a therapeutic garden area designed to cater for residents suffering from Dementia. Other winners in the commercial categories of the Spring Garden Competition were – Category 10 – Whole garden of Industrial/Commercial & Community premises (including gardens of tourist accommodation) and whole community gardens and churches, South Coffs Community Garden, Bruce King Drive, Boambee East.
