IT was just two days before Christmas when one young couple had a very lucky escape.

They were in bed asleep in their house on the corner of Salamander Way and Port Stephens Drive in Port Stephens.

It around 10.10am when they heard a loud noise, like someone was revving their engine; the next thing they knew a car had ploughed straight through their bedroom wall.

The corner property which is situated on a hill sits well above the level of the roundabout, however the gradient of the hill, nor the tree which the driver uprooted was enough to stop the car.

The driver had been travelling west along Port Stephens Drive.

Eyewitnesses reported that the elderly driver apparently suffered a blackout moments prior to the incident.

Fire, Police and Ambulance were all in attendance and whilst the driver was taken to hospital in an Ambulance, it was a lucky escape for all with no serious injuries suffered.

Ryan Veasey who was asleep in the house with his girlfriend told News Of The Area, “I think that the driver may have blacked out while he was driving, but everyone is alright.”

The car stopped around one metre for the couples bed.

At the time of the interview the residents of the property were still waiting for the fire crews to remove the vehicle from the residence and shore up the remains of the brick wall and to make the house safe.

“We are alright which is the main thing, that’s all that matters,” he said.

Residents from close by properties spoke of the need for some traffic calming and speed reduction measures to be taken at the roundabout and would like to see Council review the intersections safety.
This is not the first incident in Port Stephens of vehicles going through buildings in 2018 with the Pharmacy and Liquorland at Salamander Bay Shopping Centre both have experienced a vehicle crashing through their premises.

Ryan and his girlfriend were off to buy a lottery ticket once the house was secured, no matter which way you look at this incident, it was a very lucky escape for all concerned.
