Local Runners From Port Stephens Little Athletics Club Clean Up At Little Athletics Regional Carnival

THE Little Athletics Regional Carnival was held over two weekends one very wet and wild and the other with extreme heat with temperatures scorching at over 40 degrees.

After the cancellation of the event due to heat, the event went ahead last weekend despite the stormy weather.

Last weekend was the last opportunity for the children to compete in order to qualify for State.

Tomaree local Shari Hurdman and her training partner Aileesha Oudshoorn cleaned up achieving 6 gold and 1 silver medals.

Anja Hurdman told News Of The Area, “They are both coached by Bob Walkley who is the President of Port Stephens Little Athletics Club.

“His dedication and personalised training has certainly paid off.”

Considering the atrocious conditions their results were impressive.

Shari who attends Tomaree High School had some impressive wins taking out three first places in the Under 13’s she came First in the 100 metre sprint in 13.28 seconds, first in the 200 metre event in 26.50 seconds and first in the Long Jump, jumping an impressive 4.68 metres.

Aileesha Oudshoorn in the under 11’s also took out three first places and one second.

She came first in the 80 metre Hurdles setting a regional record at 13.8 seconds.

First in the Triple Jump jumping 8.89 metres, first in the 200 metres in 31.10 seconds and second in the 100 metre sprint in 15.25 seconds.

“They will now progress to Little Athletics State Championships 14-15 March at Sydney Olympic Park,” she said.

Many other locals participated in the carnival and achieved great results in trying conditions.
