Local fires herald extreme bushfire season

Bush ablaze at Girvan.

HOT gusty winds and dry conditions have led to the region already witnessing multiple bushfires.

The Rural Fire Service (RFS) has described these conditions as normal, with the last few years of above average rainfall giving way to lower rainfall patterns and above average temperatures.

The Bulahdelah RFS, the first on the scene of a recent bushfire at Girvan, were faced with a rapidly moving fire with the potential to impact many properties.

Crews were directed into property protection immediately.

Many residents made the decision to leave early and evacuate while others with adequate firefighting equipment stayed to help defend their properties.

There was extensive damage to bushland and the loss of property.

Another recent grass fire in Bulahdelah was started by a spark from a quad bike, demonstrating how easily fires can start.

Thankfully, many property owners impacted by recent bushfires had a ‘Bushfire Survival Plan’, which they enacted.

Captain of the Bulahdelah RFS, Rod Paar said “There’s no excuse, make your Bushfire Survival Plan today and make sure you have the Hazards Near Me app on your phone to remain updated.

“Please do not be complacent and make a Bushfire Survival Plan, it can make a huge difference to the outcome of the safety of you and your family” said Mr Paar.

Residents should ensure that gutters are cleaned, debris is removed from around properties and insurance coverage is checked.

Free bushfire survival kits and emergency radios are available at the Bulahdelah Rural Transaction Centre and the Council office in Tea Gardens.
