The couple is about to move further south to be closer to family.

Many of the community will know John for his tireless work as President of the local Lions Club.

He recently organised the Coast to Country fundraiser at the Hawks Nest Golf Club which raised $14,500 for our nearby farmers.

John’s also been actively involved in the running of the community’s Clinic Bus.

The free Clinic Bus operates three days a week, taking people to medical appointments in Raymond Terrace, Maitland and Newcastle.

It is totally self-funded by community donations.

Jenny Hughes has been the driving force behind the local line-dancing community, which has grown from just a few dancers to dozens enjoying the fun and exercise the dance provides.

Last week John Hughes was presented with a Lions International Leadership Award for outstanding achievements in service during the past year.

“It was a total surprise,” John said.

“I am honoured to have received this award but the most pleasing thing is seeing a strong and growing Lions Club to continue to serve the local community.”

John added, “The amalgamation of the Lions and Lioness Clubs is a credit to all involved and not just one person and it’s important that everyone works together to ensure the Club grows and prospers.”
