RAYMOND Terrace’s mammoth pine tree has been lit.

On Friday night, the community came together underneath the 43m tall Norfolk Pine tree for the annual community event of lighting the tree.

The tree has become a significant landmark in Raymond Terrace since it was first lit in 1961, and the tree is estimated to be at least 157 years old.

In 2010 the tree was officially registered as the largest in the southern hemisphere by the National Register of Big Trees.

“It was a brilliant evening – it’s always amazing to see everyone come together to celebrate this special time of year with their family and friends.

“We were overwhelmed by all the people who came down to join the festivities,” a representative from NSW SES – Port Stephens Unit told News Of The Area.

“We are so lucky to have such an amazing community.”

Throughout the night, community members flooded in to hear live music from Irrawang High School Students and enjoy carols by the Anglican Church choir and were even surprised by a guest appearance from Santa and his elf who stopped in to wish the Raymond Terrace community a Merry Christmas.

The bad weather stayed away after an inconsistent day allowing everyone to have an enjoyable night before the lights were switched on and met by a chorus of ‘wows’ from attendees.
