Laurence Sumner honoured at 2016 Myall Lakes Community Awards

Bulahdelah’s Laurence Sumner was named the 2016 Myall Lakes Senior Person of the Year at the Community Awards Ceremony held in Taree last week.

Laurence was recognised for his dedicated volunteer services to his community.
Member for Myall Lakes Stephen Bromhead was joined by emeritus mayor Jan McWilliams to present the awards, with 2016 Rio Paralympian James Turner also assisting.

Laurence told News Of The Area he fel t elated, but very humbled to be named this year’s winner.

“I was very surprised when I’d won, there were people there that I thought had done a lot more than what I have,” he said.
“I definitely wasn’t expecting it, but I am very honoured to win the award.”

At 85-years young, Laurence is one of Bulahdelah Rural Fire Brigade’s most active members and has attended 93 percent of all callouts in the past decade.

He is also a passionate Lions member and volunteers for the Driver Reviver and school breakfast club programs.

Tuncurry resident Julie Daskal was named the 2016 Myall Lakes Citizen of the Year for her work with the Great Lakes Carers Action Network and her selfless work with disabled children over 15 years.

Winners of the other categories are:
NSW Local Grandparent of the Year – Frances Kiem and Carol Corry (Joint Winners)
Junior Sports Person of the Year – Kristian Fiebig
Sports Person of the Year – Keith Pearce
Young Person of the Year – Thomas Dormor
Community Group of the Year – Nabiac Memorial Neighbourhood Centre

Mr Bromhead said he was elated to have received so many entries for this year’s awards.

“The independent panel of judges had an incredibly difficult task trying to single out winners in each category; it goes to show just how many special people we have in the Myall Lakes,” Mr Bromhead said.

“The list of achievements from those who won is really something to be applauded,” he added.

More than 300 people attended the award ceremony including Laurence’s family and Bulahdelah Fire Brigade members.
