Passionate and skilful on the water, seventeen year old Medowie resident Lachlan White recently won the multihull division of the 50th CHS Secondary Schools Sailing Championships held at Belmont.

Lachlan was on, what is described as, a foiling A Class boat, which had everyone’s attention on the day.

Lake Macquarie spectators were in amazement, watching him ‘foiling’ around the courses in record times.

Line honour times saw Lachie crossing the finishing well head of the mixed class opposition.

A tough handicap system saw corrected times wiping out his large winning margins, however Lachie sailing in his last CHS competition said that it was all about the buzz of blasting around the course as fast as possible on the foiling A Class.

Lachlan said, “I am fortunate to be involved in the development stages of this new and exciting way of sailing [Foiling].”

Tom Slingsby, America’s Cup winner and OIympic Gold medal holder said, “Foiling is the way the sport is going.”

This method of sailing means high levels of concentration and skill are required as the hydrofoil sailboat can achieve speeds exceeding double the wind speed.

Lachlan has been sailing since he was 9 years old and started crewing for his dad on a Formula 18 performance catamaran.

He was literally thrown in at the deep end, skipping all the beginners boat but just absolutely loved sailing from the first day.
