Mining and health representative David Simm, who has resided in Corlette for seven years and joined the ALP 12 years ago, will lead the team.

He will be supported by longtime Soldiers Point resident Roz Armstrong, who has a background in the disability sector, and tireless volunteer community worker Jim Morrison, of Corlette.

Mr Simm said that the behaviour of the current councillors and the lack of transparency of the previous council had prompted him to take a stand.

“This is the first time I have ever stood for election and it is because I want to see change,” Mr Simm said.

“The people of Nelson Bay need certainty on issues such as CBD building height limits and zonings and my experience representing the people will be invaluable.

“I want to see the Tomaree peninsula as a vibrant tourist hub while listening to the needs of the residents.”

For Ms Armstrong, a businesswoman who works as a support worker for people living with disabilities, it has been 34 years since she last stood for council elections.

“I was number two on John Nell’s ticket in 1983. I remember the debate over the tall building study of the mid-1980s and thinking how this is just the thin edge of the wedge,” she said.

“Those concerns are now becoming a reality. I would like to see the road along the Little Salamander shops be turned into one-way and better access to the Soldiers Point boat ramp.”

First timer Mr Morrison, a regular volunteer at the Tastes of the Bay and Bluewater country music festivals, said he would like to see the establishment of a performing arts centre in the Bay and better water access facilities for the disabled.
