King of The Box has hosted some of Australia’s best surfers including Jackson Baker, Ryan Callinan and Jesse Adam (Merewether), Chris Michalak (Port Stephens) and Jamie Skillin (Central Coast).

Surfers travelled from Ulladulla and the Gold Coast to be a part of King of the Box 2017.

There were plenty of contenders taking on the waves on the short breaks to see if 2017 was their year to be King of the Box.

A huge crowd braved the cold to witness the best semis and finals ever seen in the history of the event.

Nic Squires and Mitch Dawkings went blow for blow with Squires squeaking past Mitch to claim the title.

“I have a long history with the wave,” Squires said.

Mitch Dawkings wooed the crowd with his positioning and deep tube rides, but Squires’ ballistic backhand was too strong in the end.

The junior finals was taken out by local surfer Josh Stretton.

Brent “Red Dawg” Symes won the Legends expression session.

Contest director Teza McKenna told News Of The Area, “Box Beach is one of the most unique wedges in the world because the waves break very close to the shore.”

“We have perfect waves with good swell for the competition.”

“The natural amphitheatre creates a punchy left-hand wedge that is suited to deep tubes and huge airs, which is exactly what we had for King of the Box, with Box Beach protected from the gale force winds,” he added.

The 2017 King of the Box was another resounding success; organisers are talking about a bigger and better event in 2018.
