Clean Up Australia Day inspires thousands of Australians to take to their local park, beach, bushland and streets to clean up their local environment.

Volunteers are being called for in Karuah and Tea Gardens on Sunday 1 March to help keep the Myall Coast in pristine condition.

“I just feel if people care about the environment they will get involved in helping to clean it up,” Karuah volunteer Hope Simpson said.

“We only ask for about three hour’s work. We’d love to see some younger people come along this year. We could really do with some volunteers without bad backs,” she said.

Those willing to get involved in cleaning up Karuah are to meet in  Longworth Park by the Karuah River at 9am on Sunday.

“We’ve been doing this since 1990 and we will keep the tradition going,” Mrs Simpson said.

Those wishing to help with the clean up in Tea Gardens can collect their gloves and bags from the Visitor Information Centre from 9am on the day.

Loaded bags can later be dropped off at the back of the Myall Arts and Crafts Centre for pick up by the council.

Since the national event started in 1990 Australians have donated more than 27.2 million hours taking to their streets, bushland, parks and waterways on Clean Up Australia Day, removing an estimated 288,650 tonnes of rubbish from 145,754 sites across the country.
