ONE of the issues that most grass green bowling clubs must face is that the local bird life doesn’t actually understand that the green is only meant for bowling.

Plovers are often one of the worst offenders, sometimes taking possession immediately the bowlers depart.

Leon Post, champion green keeper and overseer of the Karuah green is not a big fan of Plovers, he said “their droppings are not just smelly, big and ugly, they are acidic and can kill the grass.

So, Who – Who can help Leon keep the Plovers of the green?

Of course, B-owlers do it when they are playing, but what about when they aren’t there?

Turns out that an Owl, not B-owl may just be the answer.

For the last few weeks, Hector the Owl has been on duty watching the green and so far he seems to be getting the job done.

His wings flap up and down and flutter in the lightest breeze and his red beak is positively threatening.

It seems the local birds have bought his presence and are staying away, so, it turns out it’s Hector that’s Who – Who.

If you’re the type who is keen to try something new, come and give bowling a try.

You can bowl and check out Hector at work on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Names by 09:30 and bowling starts at 10:00AM.

All ages and experience levels are welcome and loaner gear is available.
