On Monday 20 January and Tuesday 21 January, after 12 months of regional knockouts and metropolitan contests, 48 junior golfers from eight teams across NSW will make their way to Port Stephens to contest the NSW State Finals of the Encourage Shield and the Junior Pennant.

The State Junior Pennant and State Encourage Shield were introduced to provide an opportunity to all Junior Golfers in NSW to participate in a competitive match play team event.

Each District Golf Association has the opportunity to enter a team in both events each year, for the chance to become the NSW Champion Junior Match Play Team winners.

These tournaments are growing in popularity, with the first Encourage Shield being held in 2009, and now has over 100 clubs participating from over 13 districts and involving more than 600 junior boys and girls.

Mark Ingrey, Northern NSW State Manager said “The Encourage Shield and State Junior Pennant tournaments are held across the state to give our juniors access to great courses in NSW. We are very much looking forward to the tournament at Horizons”.

Shiana Tyler of Horizons Golf Resort told News Of The Area, “Playing at Horizons is sure to test the juniors golfers skills.

The Championship Golf Course is a challenging yet rewarding course, and most of the 48 junior golfers will not have played at Horizons before; this presents them with an exciting opportunity, while they strive to win the coveted crown of State Championship,” she said.

Vince Owen, Horizons Golf Resort Head Professional said “We are thrilled to host this prestigious NSW State Junior Event at Horizons and will continue to work closely with the Jack Newton Junior Golf Association to help drive top class tournaments for our junior golfers across the state”.

The tournaments at Horizons are free to watch.

The community is encouraged to come along and support these young up and coming golf stars.

This would be a great free school holiday event to bring the kids to especially those interested in getting into golf.
