ALL Year 10 students at Irrawang High School participated in the World of Work (WOW), a school to work transition program held over 3 days this week at the Raymond Terrace Bowling Club.

The intention of WOW program was to provide students with the skills to become more articulate, confident and well mannered, to provide the students with a solid grounding in manners and social graces, to help our students transition from school to work, further education or training, and to to build confidence and the ability to relate to members of the community, whilst in a comfortable albeit unfamiliar setting.

The course covered many topics including; making the right first impression, creating and maintaining your own brand, interview skills, table etiquette, personal hygiene and presentation, goal setting, team building and communication skills.

Each day six community/business representatives had lunch with students, which according to the student feedback forms was a highlight of the day for many of them.

The three days of the program were sponsored by the Real Futures Foundation and the Raymond Terrace Bowling Club
Stephen Jennings from Real Futures Foundation told News Of The Area, “The Real Futures Foundation funds the WOW programs at Irrawang and Hunter River High Schools, the unique approach of the program responds to the individual needs of students at different schools, which sees programs delivered that are relevant and provide students with skills and strategies to transition successfully from school to employment.”

The individual programs are driven by the school communities and local businesses in support of the program.

Course Facilitator Mrs Dyan Thais commented, “Jobs and opportunities are not as easy to come by any longer, so students need to have the edge and being more self-aware and socially aware are definitely skills required in the 21st Century, and this program is tailored to those needs.”
