Notable soil erosion and destruction of crops has become a serious problem for local producers.

There is growing concern around the significant increase in rabbit population throughout Port Stephens.

Resident Bob Jones felt compelled to write a letter to Councillor Chris Doohan about the issue saying he believes that this is the worst he has ever seen it.

Councillor Doohan took it upon himself to investigate these concerns.

Taking his spotlight out and around Medowie on Thursday evening 30 November through the various areas of concern and again the following morning before work.

“It has to be said that I agree 100% with the residents,” Councillor Doohan said.

Councillor Doohan said, I was surprised to find the people concerned about this issue assumed someone else was doing something about it, when in actual fact no one seems to have reported the situation at all.”

Placing trust in the Port Stephens Council Invasive Species Team Councillor Doohan submitted an official request on behalf of the community to have this issue attended to as a matter of urgency.

Councillor Doohan told News Of The Area, “Port Stephens Council have already taken action following my email on Friday which is great to hear.”

If you or anyone you know are having issues with the rabbits, you are encouraged to report it to Council.

Reports will help the council staff know where the important areas are to focus on.
