Hunter Water hosted a free event for local schools on 12 April at Finnan Park, Grahamstown Dam.

The sunny day was enjoyed by a collection of students from Grahamstown Public School, Bobs Farm and Raymond Terrace Public School.

Students participated in a variety of water related activities on the day, in rotating groups, which were provided by Hunter Water, Port Stephens Council, Hunter Local Land Services and OCCI (Ocean and Coastal Care Initiative) .

They included workshops on; catchment care and health, marine debris demonstration, all things waste, the problem with pests, how much water on earth and a geographical scavenger hunt.

Hunter Water also brought along their ‘Hydration Station’ so the children could enjoy cold water all day at the event.

Melissa Hole, education coordinator for Hunter Water, contacted the schools prior to the rescheduled event, offering all students a free bus to attend the re-booked date as an additional kind gesture from Hunter Water.

Bernadette van de Wijgaart, year six teacher at Raymond Terrace Public School, told News Of The Area, “This day was an excellent offering by Hunter Water, Land Care, OCCI (Ocean & Coastal Care Institute) and Port Stephens Council,
especially given that fieldwork is such an important aspect of the new geography syllabus.”

“Hunter Water kindly paid for the buses to transport students from Raymond Terrace Public, Grahamstown Public and Bob’s Farm Public, who all benefited from the expertise of specialists in their respective water related professions.”

“The information shared to our students was invaluable and they experienced excellent ‘hands on’ learning in a real world context,” she said.

Port Stephens Councillor Giacomo Arnott attended the event, and told News Of The Area, “It was great to see so many local schools getting on board wit this event.”

“The students I met were very keen learners.”

“Thanks must go to Hunter Water for putting on such an informative, interesting day,” he said.
