HUNTER Local Land Services has praised the efforts of ‘land carers’ in the Port Stephens and Myall Coast regions for embracing the challenges of the past year, and continuing to make a real difference to the environment in their local communities.

2020 marks the 30th anniversary of Landcare in the Hunter, a year marked by drought, bushfires and an unprecedented pandemic.

Despite the challenges, more than 1000 community members have participated in over 40 workshops and field days organised through Landcare in the Hunter in the past year.

Topics covered ranged from soil health and landscape rehydration, shorebird conservation, bee keeping, bushfire recovery, biodiversity conservation and tree planting.

“Hunter Region Landcare Network and Mid Coast 2 Tops Landcare Connection support over 100 community groups through resources provided under their ongoing formal Partnership with Hunter Local Land Services. This Partnership is a vital link providing connection between government and local communities caring for the land,” said Daintry Gerrand, Regional Agriculture Landcare Facilitator, with Hunter LLS .

“If you want to get connected with the environment in your local community there is no better way than to join your local landcare groups. It is a great opportunity to make new friends and learn the skills needed to protect your local natural environment,” she said.
