Pam was the first female Councillor elected in Port Stephens in 1974 when Council was known as Port Stephens Shire Council.

Being a Councillor living in Boat Harbour in the early 1970s presented Pam with a range of challenges which Councillors don’t face today, she used to save her change and walk to the public phone to call Council to find out if she had any messages and to conduct her council business.

It was in her first year as a Councillor that she and her husband Ray finally had telephone access in their home which made life easier.

Pam served as a Councillor between 1974 and 1980.

In this time, Pam worked tirelessly at Council to gain acceptance of women as Councillors and to gain sporting facilities for the community.

Pam Single told News Of The Area, “We applied for Sport and Recreation grants to get money and were able to secure grants for all the tennis courts and the then Anna Bay Oval.

“I was very pleased to be able to work on securing a long term asset for the community, but I feel that my community work at the Boat Harbour Community Tennis Club was more important than what I did at Council,” she said.

Pam who is now 81, is still connected to the community of Port Stephens and is an avid bowler and bowls coach.

Interestingly, residents of Boat Harbour are still struggling today to gain effective telecommunications just as Pam did in the early 1970’s, with very limited mobile phone reception available in the area.
