THE Myall Coast copped a drenching last weekend, with almost the entire average rainfall for March falling in just over 24-hours in some parts of the region.

The Bureau of Meteorology said 72 mms of rain was dumped last Saturday at Crawford River and was backed up with another 46 mms by 9am the following morning.

The heavy rainfall caused the rivers to swell with figures from the BOM showing the Myall River at Markwell peaked at 5.04ms at 1pm last Sunday.

Several bridges in Markwell felt the brunt of the rising waters which flooded the structures, cutting the roads in several places.

Markwell resident Glen Dorney said he recorded over 50 mms of rain at his property on Friday and Saturday nights.

“The water started to cover Dorney’s Bridge on Saturday night, and there was 0.3ms of water over it by Sunday morning,” he said.

“Due to the dry weather over summer, the level of the lakes and rivers have been down, so the water is draining quite quickly.”

Mr Dorney said the good news is that the water tanks at his property were now overflowing as a result of the downpour.

The Karuah River at Booral also swelled over the weekend, rising to 4.25ms at around 1pm last Saturday.
