On Saturday, 29 February all Jake’s efforts paid off with $6000 raised and hundreds turning out to watch him get clipped for a great cause. Jake was humbled by the local support he received and attributed much of the inspiration for his charitable actions to his mum who is the Treasurer of the Tomaree Breast Cancer Support Group. “When I first asked mum about the group she worked with I knew I wanted to try and help raise some funds for them,” said Jake. “I’d been growing my hair for the past eight years and it was pretty easy to decide to try and get some money together for Breast Cancer Support by shaving the mane.” Jake was supported on the day by local Ken Wagner who clipped his impressive brows to help the fundraising along. Fingal Cellar Cafe donated $500 for the shave and a top auction bid of $400 came in that saw Jake lose his beard as well. His mother, Virginia Smith was proud of her son’s efforts and said the money raised would go a long way. “Jake came to me and said he was going to shave his head and try and help our cancer support group,” said Mrs Smith. “I’m so proud, he organised it all by himself and it’s amazing that he’s been able to raise so much in a relatively short time. “He doesn’t realise but it will help a lot of people here in Port Stephens.” The Tomaree Breast Cancer Support Group will also hold a fundraising Golf Day on 24 March.
