MIDCOAST Council’s parks and roads teams have been busy in the lead-up to Easter and the school holidays, preparing for an influx of visitors during this busy time. While some projects were due for completion this week, issues with contractor availability means crews will be on the ground in Hawks Nest for at least part of the school holiday period.

Resealing works on Ibis, Dolphin, Kurrawong and Curlew Avenues will take place during the second week of the holidays, w/c 22 April, as well as on Myall Way in Tea Gardens near the Toonang Drive intersection.

“Our approach is to work around holiday periods to minimise disruption to locals and visitors, however this isn’t always possible,” explained Jamie Condie, MidCoast Council’s Manager of Operations South.

“Resealing works nearing completion in Hawks Nest can’t be pushed back until after the holidays, as the cooler weather can negatively impact the outcome.”

Resealing requires a warm road surface to be effective. If the road surface is too cool the bitumen sets quickly and does not adhere to the existing road properly, and the aggregate doesn’t stick to the bitumen.

And works to install new playground equipment in Providence Park, due to be in place by Monday 15 April, have been delayed.

“We’ve completed the initial stage according to schedule, removing the worn fixtures,” said Dan Aldridge, Council’s Manager of Community Spaces, Recreation and Trades.

“Unfortunately contractors engaged to undertake the installation have faced delays, which means the playground will remain closed for the first part of the holidays.”

It is expected the installation will commence early next week and the playground reopened as quickly as possible.

Families holidaying at Hawks Nest, and locals looking to enjoy the break, are encouraged to visit nearby parks and reserves that include Booner Street Reserve, Moira Parade Reserve, Jimmys Beach Day Area, and Winda Woppa Reserve.

Tea Gardens Library will also be hosting some exciting free activities during the school holidays including a screening of “Maya the Bee” on Wednesday 17 April at 2.30pm, and Anzac Day craft workshops on Wednesday 24 April at 2.30pm.
