A MERRY Annual General Meeting was held by the Hawks Nest Tea Gardens Progress Association (HNTGPA) at the Tea Gardens Hawks Nest Surf Life Saving Club on Wednesday, 13 December, capped off with the Christmas party for a very productive year for the HNTGPA.

Highlights of 2023 included 120 members forming eleven Management Team meetings, working closely with MidCoast Council and other local groups.

Over $154,000 worth of grants were tirelessly applied and won by the hardworking members of the Committee, and funnelled into various projects around the twin towns.

This year saw the Community Resilience and Disaster Recovery Reference Group, under Sandra Bourke, the Myall Way Emergency Planning Group, led by Jo Pearce, the Seniors Week 2024, and the timely Singing Bridge Golden Jubilee Commemorations planning for 2024.

“The anniversary of the Bridge next year is too significant to ignore, and we have successfully applied for grants to make that happen,” President Bruce Murray said.

A full year-in-review encapsulated a staggering amount of activity for any coastal town, and a happy 70th anniversary to the Progress Association.

Several hard-working volunteers cleaned the Tea Gardens Pool, then upgraded the Scout Hall for the successful Seniors Festival, which welcomed 1500 attendees.

Sponsorship of Galleries in the Gardens ‘Anderson Art Award’ and $117,000 funding for Providence Bay Park Outdoor Exercise Equipment led onto vandalism repair all over town, a successful Pool Youth Day in conjunction with MidCoast Council, The Y, the Lions Club of Tea Gardens (BBQ), and Myall Masters, and a long-awaited footpath to Peter Sinclair Gardens.

High-level politician meetings concerned the Myall River’s deteriorating health, focusing on dredging for commercial and recreational use, and a rally voiced protest against the recent offshore wind-farm proposals.

Upgrades and artworks brightened the town, and there was confirmation of a $2000 grant received from MidCoast Council to assist the Singing Bridge’s Golden Jubilee next year, which will be one of the large focus points in 2024, alongside the offshore wind turbines, restoration of the Hawks Nest Community Hall, the Pool, and a Mobimat to facilitate beach access.
