Board chairman Gerry Mohan said plans to develop more self-care units at Salamander Bay were progressing well, while work continues as part of a major refurbishment of the Shoal Bay high care unit. “We are also considering a range of uses at the company’s expansive site in Anna Bay, off Trotters Road,” Mr Mohan said. “We were recently approached by the Port Stephens Koala hospital members to use a section of this land for growing koala feed trees. “We reached a Memorandum of Understanding in regard to the number of trees, height, siting and irrigation in return for a peppercorn rent. “Last week a number of their volunteers planted somewhere in the vicinity of 500 feed trees. We see the partnership as part of our commitment to a better environment.” Mr Mohan said that future plans for the site, zoned RU2, could include a day activity centre for Harbourside residents and staff. “The property is conveniently located between our facilities on the Tomaree and Tilligerry peninsulas. “We have outgrown our premises in Donald Street, so it makes sense to move some of those operations to Anna Bay, as well as a proposed supervised play area. The ultimate goal is to establish a cultural area for the entire community. “This is all subject to council approval and we are currently in talks with the council planners.” Mr Mohan said an agreement had also been reached to erect an NBN tower close to the power poles near Trotters, and hoped that the existing community garden could be revitalised.
