THE Bay Area Boardriders’ groms lit up some clean 2 to 3 foot conditions at One Mile Beach on Sunday to push the veterans to their limits for the club’s third competition of 2020.

For some of the club’s first-timers the waves on offer proved to be double-overhead as they trimmed through their first heats and into the finals.

In particular it was 12-year-old pocket rocket Jimmi Hill who took down some big names, winning the main Open’s division in what was his fourth finals showing of the day after placing in the U14’s, U16’s and U18’s.

For club spokesmen Mark Buchanan it was great to see some newcomers pushing themselves and their shred sleds through some perfect little conditions.

“All the groms were ripping and a couple of newcomers in Sonny Rae and Nash Campbell were surfing really well in the U14’s,” said Buchanan.

“Unfortunately the wind and tide came up and it got a bit slow for the older guys, but there was still some great surfing going on!”

In the U12’s, super-grom Harlem Stone took home first place against Noah Bartlett in what looked like monster conditions for the micro-shredders.

In the U14’s, it was a familiar name in Jimmi Hill who collected the cash with Sonny Rae second, and Nash Campbell third.

For the U16’s, Taj Turner proved to spoil the triple crown for Jimmi Hill as he took top place with Jimmi in second, young prodigy Kai Buchanan third, and Isaac Sullivan fourth.

The U18’s saw Isaac Sullivan finish in first place with Jimmi Hill again placing second as Taj Turner and Kai Buchanan rounded out third and fourth places respectively.

For the Open division it was Jimmi Hill taking the crown with Mark Buchanan second, Taj Turner third, Nelson Corner fourth, and jiving Jye Astley fifth.

In the Over 28’s, Mark Buchanan cracked open the champers for a much deserved win with Jamie Doran second, Brett Weston in third and Rod Astley fourth.

For the Over 40’s, Rod Astley came away with the meat tray as Jamie Doran slashed into second.

Dean Shaw took third as Brett Weston and Mark Hill rounded out fourth and fifth.

Finally in the 50’s, Dean Shaw took first, Mark Hill slid into second, John Sullivan grabbed third, and Harry Royal the wave wizard cast himself into fourth.

The Boardriders next comp is 1 November with their presentation and AGM set for late November.
