Medowie Neighbourhood Watch had the last Neighbourhood Watch in Port Stephens when it folded over ten years ago. New committees are now being launched again across the state, and supported by NSW Police. In the past, our Medowie group hosted many informative nights for the community and provided important feedback on issues within the community to the police. The most important role of the Neighbourhood Watch was building relationships with local police and how to report intelligence correctly to properly record statistics in our area. Cr Geoff Dingle, who this week announced he is running for Mayor in the September local council elections, was a member of the original Medowie Neighbourhood Watch, and is pleased to see a relaunch received so positively. He told News Of The Area, “Thanks also to Port Stephens LAC Crime Prevention Officer Alison Stewart for attending and taking us under her wing.” “I think already we feel better connected to our police friends and if we can help them to assist us that’s exactly what we should be trying to achieve.” If you are active on Facebook, you are encouraged to find the new ‘Medowie Neighbourhood Watch’ page, and keep up to date with news, tips and local information. For this first meeting, discussions were had on scams running at the moment that the community need to be aware of, and the most appropriate reporting methods for crime. A future meeting will feature a guest speaker on scams and what to do. All community members are invited to attend a meeting, with the next scheduled for Wednesday 30 August from 7:30pm at Medowie Community Centre.
