First and foremost the Nelson Bay Marlins Women came back in the second half to win over defending champions Newcastle City in the Women’s Black Diamond AFL Grand Final in Newcastle on Saturday 27 August. Newcastle led 16-7 at the first change and then 23-8 at halftime but were unable to score a goal in the second half, being overpowered with a full time score of 5.3 (32) to 3.11 (29) by the Marlins. It was cause for great celebration for the Marlins who were beaten in the Grand Final last year against the same team. Or media@newsofthearea.com.au “This year the women went through the season undefeated,” Roger Price, the Nelson Bay Marlins President told News Of The Area. “ The Women being so successful has helped the men be more competitive,” Mr Price said. The men’s team made it through to the Preliminary Final this year where they beat Terrigal for the first time ever. “The men’s team were extremely well coached by Shaun McGrath,” Roger Price said. Presentation night last Saturday night saw Jayden Rymer and Lisa Steane both being awarded Black Diamond AFL Best and Fairest as well as taking out the Black Diamond Cup. Jayden Rhymer won the Black Diamond Cup by three votes more than Jeremy Eddy who also won the Player’s Player Award. Lisa Steane won the Women’s Award by two votes more than Pippa Smyth. Peppa Smyth, who was runner up also received the Player’s Player Award. Jeremy Eddy, won the Player’s Player Award in the Premier Division. Steane has also been a player who has been nominated to “try out” in the hopes of being drafted to the infamous GWS Giants. Added to the awards, Nelson Bay’s Women’s Coach, Lauren Cooper is nominated and now a finalist for the prestigious National Award that recognises women who made a significant contribution to the game of AFL. What a way to round off a great year Nelson Bay Marlins by finishing on tops. Fantastic write up, they are a great bunch of girls to have around the club, there enthusiasm for fundraisers and functions is unbelievable. When we said we were raising money, for breastcancer and beyond blue at a couple of our games, they are always the first to put there hand up to help. The club wouldnt be the same without them.
