The festival features three contemporary Japanese films, with English subtitles.

‘The Reverse Diaries’ starts out as a romantic comedy and twists into something darker and suspenseful, ‘Penguin Highway’ an animated sci-fi fantasy adventure, and ‘The Shoplifters’ a story about a modern Japanese family who have fallen through the cracks of society and must resort to petty crime to survive.

President of the AJSCH Leanne Gennet said the festival was about sharing Japanese culture with the Coffs Coast.

“We are aiming to share Japanese culture with Australian society by screening films that are somewhat unique and come from the modern Japanese world, and includes anime and themes from modern daily life as well as incorporating both traditional and pop culture offerings.”

“We believe that by understanding each other’s cultures that we grow closer together and contribute to a more harmonious world.”

AJSCH has presented two major events in Coffs Harbour over past years, the Film Festival and the Children’s Festival that has normally happened in May, but due to pandemic restrictions was cancelled this year, and may not be possible to present next year.

Current COVID Safe restrictions limit the audience size at the Jetty Memorial Theatre to a maximum of 127, and while the event is free patrons are asked to book tickets ahead of time via the Theatre’s website at https://www.jettytheatre.com/ or by calling the box office on 6648 4930 between 12 noon and 4pm Tuesday to Friday.
