Female Brazilian Jiu Jitsu On The Rise in Coffs Harbour Coffs Coast Sport Sport by News Of The Area - Modern Media - February 9, 2022 BJJ students of all ages attended the female seminar in Coffs Harbour last Saturday WOMEN and girls of all ages from the Mid North Coast attended a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) seminar last Saturday in Coffs Harbour under the guidance of black belt Cris Hisa. Head instructor Cris Hisa said the purpose of the seminars are to expand skills and knowledge for females. “We focused on crucial positioning details, such as side control, mount and back take. “Once a month the group gathers to train, this is an opportunity for the all-female members to expand their skills and knowledge,” said Cris. Brown belt and long term BJJ competitor Alana Lewthwait organises events to grow the BJJ community for women. “As a minority gender in BJJ, having a support network with no affiliations and zero politics has not only improved member retention within BJJ clubs but has had significant positive impacts on individuals’ progression. “The Mid North Coast Women’s BJJ Group, formed in 2020, is the result of trying to meet that need. “Fortunately, we found ourselves welcomed with open arms by the majority of gym owners along the Mid North Coast. “Without their support and willingness to give their time and space to support the group, we simply couldn’t do what we do. “I am constantly amazed at their willingness to put in the effort to provide emotionally healthy and safe training environments for their female students,” said Alana. Despite two years of gym closures due to Covid, Cris Hisa said he was honoured to support the Group into the future to help see female participation in BJJ grow.
