A man has died after a head-on motor vehicle collision in the Hunter Region today.

About 7.30am (Wednesday 10 September 2014) emergency services were called to the New England Highway, near the intersection of the Old Highway, at Ravensworth.

Witnesses have told police a head-on collision occurred between a eastbound Holden Utility and a Ford Territory travelling west.

The man driving the Holden died at the scene.

The woman driving the Ford was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The New England Highway is closed while investigations into the crash occur. The Newcastle Crash Investigation Unit is in attendance.

Local divisions along the Old Highway are in place and motorists are urged to avoid the area if possible.

A report is being prepared for the Coroner.
